The Marriott at Rivercenter was built over an existing parking structure. Although the garage had been designed by others to accept the future hotel, changes in the hotel design subsequent to construction of the parking structure created a misalignment of hotel walls and parking structure columns. As structural engineer for the hotel, CKC was challenged to solve this problem.
CKC designed a system of longitudinal beams at the second floor of the hotel to transfer loads into the existing parking structure columns. Since these transfer beams carry the entire hotel structure, they were heavily post-tensioned and stressed in three stages as the hotel was constructed. This solution proved both buildable and economical.
