Marriott Residence Inn River Place
Solving an engineering challenge with the foundation resulted in major construction cost savings.
Marriott Residence in at River Place in Portland, Oregon, is a nine-story structure with 258 suites, subterranean parking for 135 vehicles, and ground-level retail. It is located along the Willamette River in downtown Portland.
Sediment and loose fill material up to 100 feet in depth created a major foundation challenge for CKC. Seismic loads were also magnified significantly due to the amplifying effect of the soft ground.
CKC responded with a pile supported foundation design incorporating concrete vertical piles for gravity load, and battered steel piles for seismic resistance. This optimized the efficiency of both materials and resulted in a major construction cost savings.
The project was completed on time and on budget.
